TWO WORLDS COLLIDE: Physical Performers and Technicians to create their own video using Markerless Motion Capture systems and Unreal Engine integration.
Terry Notary, with 28 years of experience coaching actors and motion capture performers on some of Hollywood's biggest films, including the Planet of the Apes and Avatar franchises. Terry will take students through the same exercises he uses with his actors, from presence and physical foundation to energy, intention, movement, voice, performance, and everything in between. Join movement instructor and actor Terry Notary and Motion Capture Specialist JC Leon at OUTPOST LA for a hands-on exploration of markerless cameras and the new technology available.
Traditional motion capture with suits has advanced, now there are markerless cameras with LiDAR scanning inside a virtual production volume.
Using a live stream of the motion capture camera systems, artists and technicians can see the take in real-time as their character is portrayed in Unreal Engine 5.8.
Students will learn how to work in a motion capture volume with Terry. There, they will develop both a bipedal and a quadrupedal character, see each one in real time, and be directed by Terry himself. Each student leaves with a rendered video of both characters they played in the volume. This real-world, on-set experience is a wealth of knowledge from someone who has spent decades in the trenches of motion capture. Take it straight into your career as a performance capture artist, actor, or stunt performer. You won't want to miss it.
Hands-on technical setup, multi-camera motion capture volume alignment, network routing, and new systems with Unreal Engine 5.8 integration. Learn calibration for Captury and other mocap systems like MOVIN 3D and OptiTrack. Post rendering, learn a new AI VFX pipeline using Beeble AI.
Avatar • Planet of the Apes • The Square • Kong: Skull Island
Terry Notary is one of Hollywood's most in-demand movement coaches and creature performers, and his work has helped shape how performance capture is done.
A former Cirque du Soleil performer, he got his start in movement coaching when director Ron Howard hired him to teach an entire cast how to move. His first motion capture film was Avatar, where he was the movement coach for the Na'vi, and he went on to work as stunt coordinator and movement coach across the Planet of the Apes reboot series, where he also played Rocket. He performed Kong himself in Kong: Skull Island and played Cull Obsidian in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and he gave a standout performance as the ape-like Oleg in the Palme d'Or-winning The Square. His credits also include The Hobbit trilogy and The Adventures of Tintin: Secrets of the Unicorn, along with Nope and The Electric State. After 28 years of training A-list actors, athletes, and elite military operators, Terry has distilled everything he has learned about presence, movement, and performance into techniques that help artists perform at their best. He is extremely excited to do his first collaboration workshop with JC Leon in their Markerless Motion Capture Masterclass.
Designed to build confidence and create their own performance piece, participants will collaborate directly with motion capture technicians and directors in real-time performance scenarios. By the end of the session, performers will have hands-on experience working in a live MoCap volume and receive polished FBX animation and video references of their work.
Motion Capture Technician/ Specialist
JC Leon is a leading Character & Motion Capture Specialist in markerless optical tracking pipelines, multi-camera calibration, using Unreal Engine integrations.
JC bridges physical movement with real-time digital environments, guiding technical participants through the full stack of modern markerless motion capture: from multi-camera array alignment and spatial volume calibration to MetaHuman streaming. Learn the technical side of motion capture systems, including how to set up and operate a Captury system using FLIR cameras, as well as utilizing OptiTrack & MOVIN cameras. Participants will explore a variety of innovative tech mocap systems. In addition to mastering recording workflows, post-processing data, and character retargeting, technicians will learn how to properly prepare and rig characters for capture. To apply these skills, participants will work in a live production environment alongside actors and performers. By the end of the workshop, everyone will walk away with ready-to-use FBX animation data and fully assembled project files.
